I was sitting with a group of friends the other day when the discussion of “peace in the middle east, in the world” came up. It seems anywhere you go these days people are talking about all the unrest, and questioning where it will lead.

After a few moments a friend turned to me and asked, “How can you not be bothered by all that is going on?” I squelched the urge to toss out a quick comeback and I took a moment to consider, in my heart, why.

“Because I trust the process,” I replied. “Somewhere deep within I know that all of this “destruction” is leading to a “creative” conclusion.

“Well, I wish it would hurry up and happen,” they responded.

The same conversation is being had all around the world, in every language. The pressures of unrest have become so great that people everywhere are asking for one of two things; 1] the comfort of the familiar to return so they can “have their life back,” or, 2] the disturbance to become so great that it ushers in something better, anything but the old way.”

Everywhere people are wanting for something other than the difficult moment we are in.

Like a mother in the throws of natural childbirth, the only comfort to be found in this moment is the anticipation of something else. Yet, the laboring mother knows best that one cannot force the unfolding. Oh, you definitely want to. But, you simply cannot hurry the progression, no matter the pain, or frustration.

The newborn will arrive precisely in the moment it was meant to, and the best thing you can do…be you mother or father, doctor or nurse, is to be fully attentive in each moment and trust the process.

We are birthing a new world.

It may be difficult to perceive from the individual circumstance of your personal life, or as you watch the media reminders of things “out of control” around the world. Yet, the Truth is evident in each segment of disturbance.

When the storm has passed, we will be the proud parents of a new life – a new way of living – filled with innocence, hope, anticipation and love. We will spend the next 20 years getting to know our precious new arrival. We will take the role of instructing the newborn, when in fact; it is the newborn that is showing us alternative ways of interacting with life itself.

It is the newborn who shows us that each moment is filled with discovery and wonderment. It is the innocent who reminds us to build sandcastles and chase butterflies.

So, how in the midst of the seeming chaos, do we keep our “eye on the prize” and trust the process?
